How to Create Ads That Users Can’t Ignore

by    |    Jun 13, 2017    |       3 min read

People have sensory overload when it comes to ads, but you need to beat it. Want to know how? Try these 4 easy tips:

Different Sizes And Placements

Most ads are either leader board (728 x 90) or rectangle (300 x 250). Users are so used to these sizes by now that they just skip right over them. Generally, ads are located on the top or the right of the page.

Try something different; put your ads in a banner on the left, or the bottom, or nestled between content, or even (gasp) pop-up ads.

You want to avoid being disruptive and ‘sketchy-looking’, so make sure your ads are beautifully designed and professional looking.

Info links found the 75% of users liked the unconventional placement of their ads at the bottom of the screen. So you should try it too!

Make Your Ad Relevant

If your ad is relevant to the content on the page, your brand recall goes up by 82%.

It takes a little more time, but employing these unconventional ads is very worth it.

Consider the user’s intent when reading the content – how could you make your ad relevant? If your ad can somehow help the reader find more information about what they are reading, you’re going to see results.

Contrast With The Rest Of The Page

Catch people’s eye! If you’ve got an ad on a light-colored page, make your ad dark.

This doesn’t just apply to colors. When picking fonts, consider using a SERIF font for the call to action, with a SANS-SERIF font for the other parts.

Avoid using fonts that are to similar, because this ends up being distracting and unprofessional looking.

Sell To Your Pre-Existing Customers

If they’ve bought your product before, according to Marketing Metrics they are 60% more likely to buy from you again.

You can fairly easily create a special tracking code that uses cookies on your website visitor’s computer. This will allow your ads to follow them around the internet. You’ve probably noticed the phenomena yourself, particularly if you’ve starting filling out a check-out form and left.

Using these techniques ad blindness can be knocked out of the park. Creating a great campaign is possible, just be prepared to experiment and test. And then test again. Happy campaigning!
